What should I pay attention to when appreciating agarwood and sandalwood?
Hello everyone!
Burning high-quality agarwood is becoming increasingly common, offering stress relief and nourishment for both body and mind.
However, here are some suggestions for your reference:
1. The order of appreciating the fragrance:
When purchasing agarwood chips or pieces, prioritize the lower-quality, cheaper ones first, and then save the higher-quality, more expensive ones for last.
The reason is similar to drinking tea: if you drink the best tea first and then the less desirable ones, you'll find them bland and unappetizing!
Agarwood prices vary, but a lower price doesn't necessarily mean it's bad; it might just mean the overall oil content or age isn't as high, but it's still natural wild agarwood. Or, for example, high-quality Qinan agarwood. White and green agarwood (the king of incense) are such precious and their fragrances so captivating that it's hard to smell anything else; any other scent would just seem like a jumble of aromas!
They are worth every penny and have a purpose. To allow agarwood and sandalwood to fully express their fragrance and the characteristics of their respective producing regions,
we must first determine the order of value of each component from low to high for incense burning. Only then can we differentiate the fragrances layer by layer.
Therefore, the order of low -> medium -> high is irreversible.
2. Extracting or Processing
Agarwood: Natural agarwood grows in the wild with soil, silt, sand, insects, etc., some exposed, some hidden.
Agarwood may contain raw wood mixed with other materials, or have less oil and more raw wood...
Agarwood may contain glue, paint, or wax, etc.
Shops usually clean the surface,
but not completely.
To ensure a pleasant experience and result, the materials to be burned must be carefully examined before selecting clean, uncontaminated agarwood resin, or cutting, pinching, or crushing it... This process is called "extracting the fragrance."

3. Appropriate Burning Methods:
There are many ways to heat agarwood, some of which are listed below:
1. Direct burning
2. Electronic temperature control heating
3. Charcoal
burying Agarwood and sandalwood each have their own superior aroma characteristics from different producing regions. How to bring out these characteristics? Temperature control is crucial.
For example,
when I tasted Hainan Island red soil agarwood with an electronic temperature control heater, it had a delicate and sweet aroma, but the lingering fragrance was lacking...
However, if I used direct burning or charcoal burying, the lingering fragrance was obvious and beautiful.
When burning Indonesian agarwood, I found the aroma from the instantaneous release of oils to be too strong.
If using... Using an electric incense burner, first set it to a low temperature and then slowly adjust the setting upwards to savor the aroma;
this is when the fragrance is most beautiful. For my personal preference, this is just right.
However, factors such as the location, space, and physical condition of each person
will affect their experience with the same agarwood, leading to different evaluations.
Therefore, proper temperature control allows the agarwood to release its best aroma.
Regular incense burning not only helps you understand the characteristics of agarwood and sandalwood fragrances but
can also refresh the mind and relieve stress...
4. While the environment for incense appreciation can be anywhere, and a tranquil mind is essential , being in an environment with too many or too strong scents will diminish the enjoyment of the incense.
5. Cleaning and replacing utensils : Our incense burner and the ash in the charcoal burner will gradually accumulate various oil stains and embers after use. Keeping the incense burner clean and checking and replacing the ash will not only ensure a pure aroma but also prevent the smokeless charcoal from going out. The above is provided for your reference.
