How does wild agarwood form?
Wild agarwood has a wonderful aroma, but how is it formed?
Natural agarwood is formed from various wounds caused by insects, animal punctures, scratches, lightning strikes, knife and axe cuts, ant holes, and fungal invasion.
The agarwood secretes resin to cover these wounds, preventing further damage—
much like the scab forming on human skin after an injury.

... The agarwood tree slowly secretes resin to cover the wounds, a process that consumes a lot of its life force. But nature's creative power never stops.
Unable to withstand this force, the agarwood tree dies and returns to the earth.
The parts of the tree that don't contain resin are then exposed to the elements—climate, insects, and soil... The resin decomposes and disappears,
but the oily portion combines with the soil, subterranean fungi, and minerals
to form what is known as wild agarwood.

Buried for hundreds to thousands of years, it develops into high-quality agarwood.
Agarwood harvesters in agarwood-producing regions face
challenges such as difficult transportation, environmental damage, and long distances, limiting their harvesting capacity. After harvesting, it
is exported in small quantities through legal traders (under the CITES framework, as per the Washington Convention) without harming the species.
Agarwood comes from plants of the genus *Aquilaria* and is commonly used as medicine, perfume, or fragrance. It has been used medicinally for thousands of years in traditional Indian medicine, Tibetan medicine, and traditional East Asian medicine.
Agarwood perfume is made by mixing agarwood oil with other solvents (such as sandalwood oil); agarwood essence is also recently used in soaps and shampoos. Agarwood incense and agarwood oil are both commonly used aromatics in the Middle East.
The age of the agarwood tree, the location of any damage, and the amount of resin secreted will influence the future development and use of that piece of agarwood.
