The difference between Shouxintang agarwood prayer beads and other agarwood prayer beads on the market.
Hello everyone!
I've been working in the cutting and making of wild agarwood prayer beads for a while now, and I'm encountering more and more questions from fellow agarwood enthusiasts about buying beads from imitation agarwood shops!
One friend asked: Why did the agarwood beads I bought from a certain seller sink in water, which I saw on the spot? But after handling them for about a month, they stopped sinking. Why is that? I'm using them normally!??? Agarwood logs are almost
always wet when they're imported to Taiwan , meaning they contain water . Usually, the reason such agarwood sinks in water isn't because it's rich in agarwood oil or has a density greater than water... If you directly use it to make prayer beads, besides causing the beads to float
after a while , the beads will also deform, crack, etc.! You can try this experiment: Take a piece of agarwood with slightly oily veins and soak it in water (stirring it will increase its sinking speed). If it doesn't sink in a day, it will sink in two days, and so on... Therefore, when agarwood beads are made from damp wood, they will naturally sink in water. Shouxintang's method for making Buddhist prayer beads involves letting the raw agarwood sit for over a year. Assuming the original imported agarwood weighs 1000 catties (approximately 500 kg), after a month it will weigh 800 catties. After three months, it will have lost about 500 catties (nearly half of the weight is water). Only after completely removing the water does the process begin, instead of immediately making them after importation to Taiwan. This ensures that collectors and enthusiasts of agarwood prayer beads receive the highest quality beads, with every penny spent wisely! Furthermore, after a long period of storage and... After the agarwood logs have undergone "self-aging" (
causing them to crack and break as they should ), these defects are removed during the making of agarwood prayer beads. This process results in high-quality, non-deforming, permanently fragrant, and permanently sinking agarwood prayer beads.
This also explains why Shouxintang, in order to produce high-quality agarwood prayer beads, chooses meticulous and time-consuming processes for even the smallest details.
Currently, even experts cannot distinguish between good and bad imitation agarwood prayer beads, let alone ordinary buyers. Problems will only surface after a period of time (when the log dries)!!!
Choose carefully!!! Some agarwood prayer beads with few oil lines can still sink in water, which makes me deeply suspicious! Everyone knows
that agarwood
prayer beads have a density greater than water, which is why they sink;
therefore , the agarwood prayer
beads in my shop are usually rich in oil lines, allowing them to sink quickly in water.
However, recently I've often seen agarwood prayer beads with few oil lines that still sink. The reason might be, as discussed above, besides the water content, that they are processed
or hand-made to make them sink!
