Meeting with the former chairman of the fragrance company
Mr. Luo, former chairman of the Incense Association, visited my shop and shared his views on incense from various perspectives.
I not only admire the contributions of these senior figures to improving the quality of incense production in Taiwan,
but also received his advice and ethical guidance regarding the chaotic incense market.
As previously reported in various electronic media and newspapers, the association also invited experts in toxicology and incense manufacturing to
provide suggestions on incense materials that promote human health while also respecting traditional customs. The toxicology experts also discussed the various substances that release during combustion... Smoke is toxic, including to the skin, etc.
However, Chairman Luo points out that the traditional Chinese medicine classic, the Compendium of Materia Medica, records commonly used natural incense materials such as agarwood, sandalwood, rhubarb, small yellow peony root, spikenard, fragrant incense, fragrant grass, and old wood... (please refer to the Compendium of Materia Medica for details). These are non-toxic and beneficial to the human body.
Furthermore, the use of incense sticks dates back over 3,000 years; it turns out our ancestors had already studied incense materials!
Moreover, previous product inspections of incense products have resulted in the conclusion that they "contain toxins." The former chairman strongly disagreed with this! He cited an example: according to the standards for incense testing, calculating the toxicity in a "small" cubic space
is equivalent to smoking fifty cigarettes at once! This standard is not how incense is used today. Considering that a typical household uses a maximum of three sticks and a minimum of one, this is already close to zero.
A reporter once asked Chairman Luo: Why burn incense? He said: If you have doubts about incense, you can choose not to burn it. So why do we burn incense?
First, various religions have very profound and unique meanings regarding offering incense and paying homage to Buddha. The use of incense is inherently righteous, and all religious circles hold a positive view of its use; therefore, I will not
cite scriptures to explain further. Secondly, the use of incense in ancestral worship, besides expressing gratitude for the bloodline passed down from ancestors, is more importantly a sign of upholding ancestral virtues and family precepts. Offering incense in the morning reminds us to remember the earnest teachings of our ancestors for future generations, and to conduct ourselves with tact and wisdom. Offering incense in the evening allows us to reflect on whether our actions and conduct throughout the day were morally sound and in accordance with the clear teachings of our ancestors. Where did we fall short? How could we have done better? We should reflect on ourselves and seek the cause within ourselves.
Regarding imported incense, the Taiwanese incense industry sometimes mixes it with other fragrances or adds lime and nitrates to incense that is then sold as natural incense. Chairman Luo appealed: Today, blended incense products overthrow natural incense products. Tomorrow, consumers will overthrow blended incense products!!!
Incense making is a business of morality and conscience—one of the industries closest to Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and deities; allowing consumers to use natural incense products to worship Buddha and deities demonstrates moral awareness and conduct!!! The impact of lacking "morality" is immense!!! Recent domestic and international scandals involving dairy products, food safety, and cooking oil, etc., have had far-reaching consequences, affecting countless victims—we should all learn from these examples!
After the conversation, before getting into his car, Chairman Luo reminded me to continue my father's perseverance, ensuring the enduring legacy of traditional incense making.
